Renewable natural gas is an emerging renewable fuel derived from waste. Unlike electric renewables like solar and wind that can sometimes be unreliable because of weather, renewable natural gas is derived from organic waste which is plentiful.
Renewable natural gas can reduce greenhouse gas emissions and help our environment. That is a net zero carbon impact! But where does it come from and how is it made?
Let’s start at the beginning.
RNG is made from decomposing organic matter. That can be wastewater sludge, animal manure, or food waste. Landfills account for 56% of currently operational RNG projects.
Then this biogas goes through a cleaning process where is becomes usable. In order to do this, first, hydrogen sulfide and water are removed. Then, CO2 is removed via chemical, pressure, or membrane processes.
The gas is now usable and supplied into the natural gas network.
Just like natural gas, renewable gas provides clean, safe, reliable and affordable energy to homes and businesses for heat, hot water, cooking and a variety of other needs.
